Sorry for the lack of posts the last couple of days, but I have now moved onto 2010. The Mets are 8 game back of the Wild Card right now and I just don't see how the Mets can compete with the pitching staff that the Giants have or even the Rockies, who are 1 and 2 in the Wild Card standings. The Mets have 57 games left in the season and unless they go 40-17 the rest of the way, I don't see how they can come close to winning the wild card or the NL East. I think it is going to take more than 90 wins to win the Wild Card and the NL East is a whole other story. When the Phillies added Cliff Lee, I pretty much resigned myself to them winning the NL East again and I don't think I am alone in that assumption.
So what about 2010...what do the Mets need to do? Good question.
If we look at position players, we will have the following back for sure: DW5, Reyes, Franeour, Beltran, and Murphy. I can see Pagan and Castillo sticking around. I am not sure about Delgado, Sheffield or other bench players. I would be surprised is Schnieder is still here...and Santos will probably stay and be the back-up to whomever the Mets could get.
As far as pitching goes...Santana and Pelfrey will be back and after that I don't know. Do the Mets try to trade Perez and eat some money in the process? K-Rod will be back, as will probably Parnell and maybe Putz, but I think Putz wants to be a closer, so it would surprise me if he's not here.
So many questions to answer this off season.
These are just my thoughts and not based on anything I have read or heard.

It depends on the financial situation, I guess.
The FA market isn't that strong, & if the Madoff thing has been that bad for the Wilpons', we won't be spending like crazy. And for what, really?
Pitchers.
If $ is an issue, I'd gamble on guys coming back from injuries, if they're cleared. Sheets & Kelvim Escobar, maybe Webb if he's there. Lackey will get better offers than whatever we'd throw at him, I'd guess, & why would he choose the mess over here unless we offer the most money.
We're stuck w/ Perez, too.
I guess if Daniel Cabrera keeps getting oppurtunities, anything's possible, but we'll be paying the contract no matter who he pitches for, & w/o a decent return. All the teams know we're stuck, & we'll get no value at all for him.
Lineup.
I doubt Delgado wants to stay in NY. He can go to the AL & DH, again, why would he want to stay here. He never wanted to come here in the first place...took a smaller pay check to sign w/ FLA.
I'm ok w/ Murphy at 1B, but wouldn't be opposed to sugning Nick Johnson as a short term bridge to Ike Davis. Castillo...same as Perez. Too expensive for other teams, we'll pay him to play for someone else, & again, get nothing useable back. No ones' out to do us any favors.
I'd resign Schneider to platoon w/ Santos. There's no catchers worth signing that are an upgrade. Give Thole another year in the minors, he may be our catcher of the future, no need to rush him now. Omar has few options...he's made this bed. The window is just about closed. The team he built over the last 5 years had their oppurtunities & failed.
